Well, even though he became an Eagle Scout, this poor bugle is the result of a time when our son was not "prepared". He was the troop bugler, and kept this instrument in a soft gig bag. Usually, he kept it with his personal gear, but on this one particular campout, it ended up in the troop truck, apparently underneath the chuck case. Sigh. That was the end of his bugling career, although he ended up being a credible tubist. All is forgiven. But, I digress.I am also a bugler (for patriotic events, flag retirement ceremonies and military funerals), but have a 50s Holton that I favor, so hanging on to this worthy Rexcraft doesn't really meet a need. I played it just minutes ago, and honestly, it plays easily and sounds pretty good in spite of the damage to the bell. So, you could certainly play this - you'd just look pathetic. The dents and crimps could be pulled and repaired, but there would always be some evidence of the experience, but only upon close inspection. You could take a hammer and finish the job, but I hope you won't. You could turn it into a lamp (I love my Albert [obsolete] system clarinet lamp) or wall hanging, or keep it as a BSA collectible, but I'm personally hoping you'll play it. Mouthpiece is original, or at least, it's certainly a bugle mouthpiece - not trumpet or cornet.Since there is no serial number, I can' read more
