Vintage Rookwood Elephant Candle Holder, Pale Pink on Pale Green Mat Originally created by Rookwood's legendary Kataro Shirayamadani, this whimsical figurine (Rookwood form #6059, as stamped on the bottom along with the Rookwood reverse initial logo and the Roman numeral XXIX for 1929, its year of production) depicts a somewhat disgruntled-looking elephant sitting down on the job of balancing a candle holder atop its head. Nearly five inches long from its tail to the bend in its trunk, the elephant stands (or sits) four inches high. The ivory color of the clay beneath shows through the pale green mat finish at the extremities, and at the top, w the candle holder rests, the piece has been doused in a beautiful, pale pink over-glaze. Given the number of irregular surfaces and its fragile, exposed trunk, i t's no wonder we see so few of this particular form. That this elephant shows some signs of wear at its extremities is not surprising, but it has held up remarkably well considering the proximity to its 80th birthday ( and thanks to a recent gentle but thorough cleaning). Though some pitting remains (as seen in the pictures) the considerable peppering and some rust stains that used to be such a part of this piece are almost entirely gone (again, see the photos). Otherwise t are no additional flaws; no cracks, chips, repairs or any other problems I see or know of. The piece is offered at auction with a low starting bid and no reserve; winner to pay all shipping/handling and insurance. I encourage your questions before bidding is over, and I will do mybest to answer them in a timely fashion. Please not to bid if you'renot serious about winning. The winning bid is a binding contract. Though I will gladly accept returns if I have misrepresented an item in either description or photo, the auction otherwise is an 'as is' transaction. Thank you for taking some time considering this attractive and somewhat unusual piece of vintage Rookwood. Should you decide to bid, good luck in the auction. I often have other items available for your consideration. I hope you'll take a look. Thanks.
