This is a nice example of the elaborate, deluxe version of the Schwinn Approved speedometer head by Huret of France, a dual-scale English/Metric version in which the outer Miles per Hour scale is stamped in chrome silver. This example is datestamped (in the upper right corner of the back) on the 8th week of 1980 (see photos 3 & 4), and has been completely reconditioned and rebuilt. This design of speedometer first appeared in the 1968 Schwinn catalog as part number 08 450, was available all the way into the 1990s, and was also built into their Deluxe Exerciser (XR4 through XR7). This example shows the later dual-scale dial design (adding a Km/Hr scale on the inner dial between the pointer and the odometer) on a redesigned face. This version is a 0-40 MPH model (or 0-60 Km/Hr) with a nice finish: polished chrome rim, glass face and chrome housing, with a very good shine. The pointer is orange, the Km/Hr scale is white on black, and the MPH indicators are stamped in silver. It has been disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and reset (by hand, not by spinning it backwards). It was then polished, waxed, reassembled, bench-tested and is working fine, turning freely. The casing does show light speckling, but was polished to restore the original shine, and waxed to stay that way. The speedometer head is 2 3/8" wide, 2¼" high and 1 5/8" deep.
