Up for auction and your consideration: Shallow Water Dive Helmet T his is a vintage. one-of-a-kind dive helmet from the San Juan Islands in the Northern Puget Sound area of Washington state. We cannot date the helmet exactly, but judging by the rivets, rubber polstering, and other hardware, it easily predates scuba. It was made from what was probably an old galvanized steel water tank. The helmet could have been used in any number of sub-marine applications, such as dock work around the fishing fleet marinas and canneries, salmon trap repair, etc. We found remarkably similar helmets featured on the Diving Heritage website at /shallowwater.htm (select "home made hats"). They describe these home made helmets as a weighted metal hat that rest on the diver's shoulders. Air is supplied through a nipple or valve, causing a slight overpressure resulting in air bubbling out the bottom of the helmet around the diver's shoulders. These helmets also have a sturdy handle on the top so that a tender can lift the helmet on and off the diver. This is a very interesting virtual museum (you should check it out, even if your not interested in the helmet). Measurements are 28 inches stem to stern x 10-1/2 inches in diameter. The window is 9-3/4 x 8-1/2 inches. At the very least, this helmet serves as a humble monument to those islanders who were rather isolated at that time, and who were famous for making do with what they had.
