Beautiful Vintage Shell Cameo Full Body Cameo of Lacy Playing a Lute The pendant is 1.25inches from north to south and .75inch east to west. The bezel is hallmarked looks to be ROC but research says is probably 800 silver stamp . The cameo and bezel are both in very good antique condition... there is appropriate wear on the back of the bezel from years of use.. Dating this piece is difficult because of the complete lack of marks. However, if you use the rule of thumb that many cameo collectors use to judge approximate time frame, one could guess it to be Victorian. The facial features are very classical and the hair style is mid to late Victorian. While I can't pinpoint an exact timeframe I think you would find it difficult to find a full body shell cameo that is better rendered than this one .Most cameos are carved in profile which is a less complex approach because it does not require the depth of shell and the skill to bring a full featured face into three dimension. This cameo has all the signs of a master carver...The features are extremely proportional and beautifully rendered. Notice the translucent quality of the hair and the expression of the face and eyes.
