This is a beautiful, and origin al Hirado porcelain incense burner with openwork (Hiradoyaki Kagome Sukashi Kouro). The bottom has the mitsuboshi mark and under that it's signed Moemon. Hirado still exists today, and as in Kabuki, the artist's name is passed down from old master to new. The Moemon now is the 15th generation. A little research came up with this: "Hirado porcelain was produced initially for the daimyo's exclusive use, then later for commercial distribution. Early Hirado ware was known in Japan for its high quality and fine craftsmanship. The golden age of Hirado porcelain lasted from 1751-1843, during which time the finest porcelain in Japan was produced. When the economic structure of the feudal system began to disintegrate during the early 19th century, daimyo support of the kilns was replaced by export contracts with the Dutch East India Company. By the 1840s Hirado ware had become an export eagerly sought by sophisticated buyers in the West. Hirado porcelain was featured in the great international expositions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries." This incense burner stands approx. 21 cm (8.25 inches) and weighs 976 grams, nearly 1 kilo. The openwork lid is decorated with a lion-dog. The overall condition is excellent. One very small leaf is broke on the upper part, and one of the larger leaves on the bottom is broke. These are very minor and I absolutely guarantee these could easily be fixed by a porcelain restorer for very little cost. All the openwork (sukashi) is perfect. It comes in the original kiribako (storage box) too. This was probably made by the 14th generation Moemon, dating it to the mid Showa era. The fact is most Hirado sold today isn't signed, and isn't real Hirado, just simply blanc de Chine. I guarantee 100% the authenticity of this incense burner to be real Hirado porcelain.
