Up for auction is:
A gorgeous Mata Ortiz Navtive Mexican Clay Pot signed by Olivia Dominguez. It is in near mint condition. Mata Ortiz pottery is a revival that was started in the 70's near Chihuahua Mexico. Using shards and pieces of the native american pots, a man figured out how to replicate this using traditional materials and methods. For more information on the Mata Ortiz Tradition please see: / or / Both are wonderful sites for price comparison, and a little more history on the Mata Ortiz Tradition. These pots retail for hundreds of dollars to well over a thousand. This piece of Pottery is just gorgeous. The natural clay pot which would have been coiled, and then smoothed over is exquisite. You can feel the roughness on the interior, while the exterior looks like it was thrown on a wheel, as smooth as it is. Amazing how the Native Artists can get this quality of fine thin pottery by hand without modern convention. It keeps me in awe. This piece measuring 4.5" tall, and about 7" wide, is well decorated. It is covered in geometric hand made native patterns. Quite symetrical, and well done. The bottom is not flat as many pots are. It is rounded, yet the pot sits upright and straight. You can still see some black from the final firing most likely in some sort of a traditional wood fired kiln. T is a slight scratch on the bottom, but aside from that, this piece is mint. The bottom is inscribed with "Olivia Dominguez Rentaria". The wonderful colores used on this pot are all native, and most likely naturally tinted. This would be a perfect addition to any southwestern decor, or to a Native Indian collection. -=- IN CLOSING...
