This is a richly detailed metal dust pan souvenir from Atlantic City, NJ New Jersey. Near mint with no bends or breaks. Large measuring 7 1/2 inches by 7 1/4 inches. Shows three detailed pier views including the Steel Pier, Young's New Million Dollar Pier, and Steeplechase Pier. Also shows views of Marlborough and Traymore Hotels, Convention Hall, and Ambassador Hotel. Edge is coiled dragons. Nice early vintage souvenir marked NARA Trading Company Made in Japan on reverse. Steel Pier The Steel Pier is a 1,000 foot long amusement pier in Atlantic City , New Jersey . It is located opposite The Boardwalk from Trump Taj Mahal. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) gives these geographic coordinates for Steel Pier: Latitude - 39°, 21 Minutes, 30 Seconds - North; Longitude - 74°, 24 Minutes, 40 Seconds - West. Steel Pier will re-open for Palm Sunday weekend (March 15-16) in 2008 with the 4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Plans are being made for other events in the 2008 season. Steel Pier has continued to operate as an amusement pier, while plans are being finalized to redevelop the site: * On August 21, 2006 it was announced that Steel Pier, which has been open since 1898, would close permanently in October. * On January 3, 2007 it was then announced that Steel Pier would be open for one more season. * On September 13, 2007, it was announced that Steel Pier will most likely reopen for the 2008 season (contracts have not yet been signed), since the plans for the redevelopment of the pier site have not been finalized due to the complexity of the project. The pier, which is owned by Trump Entertainment Resorts, reportedly will be redeveloped into retail and entertainment attractions along with luxury condominiums, once it gets the necessary approvals. The pier has a storied past. It was described as "an Amusement City at Sea." It also was once called the "Showplace of the Nation" and included such acts as the High Diving horse, Rex the Wonder Dog, a water-skiing canine in the 1930's and even Frank Sinatra and Al Jolson. The pier used to be much longer, but a December, 1969 fire six months before the opening of the 1970 season shortened its size by about a third. The original wooden pier with steel underpinnings was destroyed in a 1982 fire; the current concrete structure dates from 1993. Young's Million Dollar Pier They gatd twice daily for the best show in town. All manner of fish plucked from the deep spilled onto the deck, as the crowd leaned on the wooden railing and gawked. But the most striking species in view was the maker of the feast, Captain John L. Young, who stood t in his straw hat and pantaloons, and lectured on the wonders of the sea. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of marine life, which he revered in ways perhaps more spiritual than commercial. Man, he insisted to onlookers above the scaly slippery mound, was descended from the fish. Million Dollar Pier's deep sea net haul launched in 1907, a year after CPT Young's new pier opened, but the spectacle already had become a staple at his Ocean Pier farther uptown. He had joined other investors to build the latest amusement pier, which reflected his vision and bore his imprint. Young - captain by acclamation only - was a promoter and an empire-builder, and for decades, Million Dollar was one of Atlantic City 's chief attractions, and the site of the captain's imperial residence. Born in Absecon in 1853, John Lake Young came to South Atlantic City (now Margate ) and found work as a carpenter, reportedly helping to build the immortal Lucy the Elephant. Later a policeman in Atlantic City , he teamed with a retired baker to cook up some business projects on the Boardwalk. The two men operated bathhouses, a carousel, and a shooting gallery before acquiring Applegate Pier at Tennessee Avenue .
