VINTAGE STANLEY #20 COMPASS or CIRCULAR PLANE This Stanley #20 Compass Plane came from my late fathers collection of wood working tools. He acquired this (and many other tools) in the late 1950âe(tm)s from the widow of a long-time friend Howard Wiseman. Howard was without question the finest woodworker I ever met. He did things with a hatchet that most would use planes to do. Howard was a boatbuilder with a heck-of-a reputation in Los Angeles in the early 1950âe(tm)s. His Westliner series outboards set the record for propeller driven boats running up the rapids of the Colorado River . It was not until jet boats came into being that the record was broken. Of course, Howard took great care of his tools. I doubt that my father ever used them as he had his own (newer) tools. They were stored indoors in Los Angeles , until my parents passed away in 1995. We brought many of his tools, including this plane, to Oregon , w they have been kept indoors in a heated space. This plane is complete, and all parts seem to work well. T is some discoloration on the sole plate. All we did was wipe off the dust and quickly clean the plane before listing.
