Letter Scale or Postal Scale – for items 0 to 9 oz. This is small – 9 ¾” overall and the base is cast iron and the name “Fairbanks” (Two brothers, Thaddeus and Erastus Fairbanks founded the Fairbanks Scales manufacturing company in 1830 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont) is cast into it. The base is 4 ½” x 3 3/8”. The tray, arm, and weight are all of brass. Circa 1900. This is a steelyard style scale, Steelyard scales have a beam with unequal arms. The long arm has a weight suspended from it, which is moved until equilibrium is obtained. The load is suspended from the short arm of the beam.
