THE COMIC WEEKLY 1938

THE COMIC WEEKLY was included with the Sunday edition of the DETROIT NEWS . The Comic Weekly had between 16 and 20 pages on average each week depending on the number of ads and comics in each section. The Comics had the same dimensions as the newspaper itself measuring 21 1/4âe x 15 1/2âe. The volume is between 2 1/2âe - 3âe high.

This is a bound volume of the entire 1938 year of comics. Since this was a weekly, t must be well over 900 pages.

Heavy paper covers were used to protect the bound volume.

CONDITION: This volume has just a few minor problems. The front heavy paper cover is loose and so is the 1st page of the first issue. That page is a little ragged. In the Sept. 4 issue, t is a square piece that was torn out. Also on the Dec. 25 issue, t is a large taped tear on the TARZAN strip. Other than that, t is minor wear showing. They were bound with a heavy string at 11 or 12 positions. This volume has a little more looseness than some of the other volumes - but the volume is still held together nicely.

The Included comics are: LALA PALOOZA by Rube Goldberg JANE ARDEN LENA PRY LIâe(tm)L ABNER OUT OUR WAY THE COMIC ZOO OFF THE RECORD TAILSPIN TOMMY 4 ACES THE TIMID SOUL LIFEâe(tm)S LIKE THAT ELLA CINDERS BEN WEBSTER REGâe(tm)LAR FELLERS DAISY BELLE MICKEY FINN DAN DUNN Secret Operative48 BIG CHIEF WAHOO DAN WINSLOW NAPOLEON the dog TARZAN THE BUNGLE FAMILY GIRLS BOOTHINS MR. AND MRS. OFF THE RECORD SIDE SHOW by Rube Goldberg starts later TOONERVILLE FOLKS RED RYDER 1st appearance Nov. 4 and CHARLIE CHAN 1st appearance same issue

In addition, t are series called VIGNETTES OF LIFE Throughout a year, of course, some new comics and series may have been added and some may have been removed.

Finally, t are 4-7 and sometimes more advertising sections - many incorporating their products in comic form. Some of these are WHEATENA PRINCE ALBERT & CAMELS - full page Christmas ad with Santa PEPSODENT and other tooth pastes and powders, many over the counter medical items RALSTON AUNT JEMIMA LIONEL AND AMERICAN FLYER model trains & ERECTOR sets appear around Christmas time In many of these ads t are movie stars as well as Radio and Sport personalities

I purchased this and other volumes at an estate auctions some months back - and at the time requested some information about the origination of these volumes. Unfortunately, I was given no information. I can only guess that they were bound at the newspaper publisher and kept in an old newspaper vault. Iâe(tm)ve taken many photos but will be attaching only a few so that you can get the flavor of this wonderful set.
