THE COMIC WEEKLY 1941

THE COMIC WEEKLY was included with the Sunday edition of the DETROIT NEWS . The Comic Weekly had between 16 and 20 pages on average each week depending on the number of ads and comics in each section. The Comics had the same dimensions as the newspaper itself measuring 21 1/4âe x 15 1/2âe. They are between 2 1/2âe - 3âe.

This is a bound volume of the entire 1941 year of comics. Since this was a weekly, t must be well over 900 pages.

Heavy paper covers were used to protect the bound volume.

CONDITION: The 2 covers are still on but the front cover shows a little moisture problem - the cover no doubt saved the first several issues. The cover shows stains and moisture warping. The First issue, Jan. 5 shows some remnants of moisture - a little wrinkling, staining, edge raggedness and a little more edge foxing. The 2nd and 3rd issues show less and less moisture effects. By the 4th issue the comics section are in nice normal condition. The final issue also has some more staining and edge tears. The rest of the volume is in quite nice normal condition. They were bound with a heavy string at 11 or 12 positions.

The Included comics are: RED RYDER TARZAN LIâe(tm)L ABNER CHIEF WAHOO GIRLS THE NEBBS NAPOLEON TOONERVILLE FOLKS DAN WINSLOW of teh Navy OFF THE RECORD JANE ARDEN FLYINâe(tm) JENNY LIFEâe(tm)S LIKE THAT SUPERMAN YOU KNOW HOW IT IS OUT OUR WAY BRENDA BREEZE THE BUNGLE FAMILY MICKEY FINN THE SPIRIT was introudced in mid January. It was a weekly Comic Book section (8 small pages) BEN WEBSTER BABE & HORACE OUR BILL OUR BOARDING HOUSE BIFF BAKER

In addition, these series made their appearance VIGNETTES OF LIFE PRIVATE LIVES about world famous celebrities ARMY ANTICS Throughout a year, of course, some new comics and series may have been added and some may have been removed.

Finally, t are 4-7 and sometimes more advertising sections - many incorporating their products in comic form. Some of these are WHEATENA WHEATIES PRINCE ALBERT & CAMELS - full page Christmas ad with Santa PEPSODENT and other tooth pastes and powders, many over the counter medical items RALSTON AUNT JEMIMA LIONEL AND AMERICAN FLYER model trains & ERECTOR sets appear around Christmas time In many of these ads t are movie stars as well as Radio and Sport personalities

I purchased this and other volumes at an estate auctions some months back - and at the time requested some information about the origination of these volumes. Unfortunately, I was given no information. I can only guess that they were bound at the newspaper publisher and kept in an old newspaper vault. Iâe(tm)ve taken many photos but will be attaching only a few so that you can get the flavor of this wonderful set.
