DESCRIPTION : This is a STUPENDOUS silver necklace that was handwrought in Taxco, Mexico, prior to 1948 (it lacks the Eagle assay mark which was mandated on silver items by the Mexican government in 1948). It is masterfully crafted in a wonderful organic motif with an art deco flair ~ this design was originated by the renowned silver maestros, LOS CASTILLO. It is one of their earliest and most cherished designs of flowing leaf shapes with large domed balls. A Los Castillo brooch made in this design, is shown on page 88, photo VI-18 in Mexican Silver by Penny C. Morrill and Carole A. Berk. This fabulous necklace consists of nineteen very dimensional repousse silver links in a classic floral and foilate motif with an art deco flair ~ the design is exquisite with flowing leaves that open to reveal a large silver demi sp The incised designs are heavily oxidized which highlights the magnificent silverwork beautifully. The links are riveted together on the back of the links, which attests to the very high quality of this piece. The clasp is a simple hook closure that holds the necklace securely in place. This is a classical and timelessly elegant necklace ~ it is very extremely well made and would be an asset to any vintage Taxco silver collection! SIZE: Inside circumference when closed is 16-3/4", width is 1/2" and weight is 63 grams. CONDITION : Superior vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to silver domed balls or silverwork ~ no damage noted ~ just about perfect! HALLMARKS : Simply hallmarked "TAXCO, 098 (upside down and is a design/inventory number)". This necklace is at least sterling 925 silver but is most likely a higher grade of silver since most of the early pieces were crafted of 930-980 silver because it did not polish as quickly. Due to the rich, warm luster of the silver, it is my opinion that this necklace is made of 980 silver. PLEASE NOTE: Mexican vintage si lver jewelry is handwrought, and tfore, not perfect ~ each piece will have variances that indicate that the piece is hand made. Vintage pieces will show various signs of wear since they have been pre-loved ~ items are described to the best of my ability and any damage will be noted.
