Vintage Taylor/Seto MCR-11 Tanto Survival Bowie Knife
This week, I’m offering three similar black “survival” knives, each dating from the mid-1980s. I inherited them from a friend over 20 years ago, and since I’ll never use them, they’re here. My friend collected them and seems to have employed them for things like cutting wallboard, judging from the residue on one of them. He didn’t hunt, and as far as I know he used them for no more than occasional household tasks. The knives have been stored in a drawer, unused, for the two decades that I’ve owned them. I know little about this type of knife and have relied upon other listings of similar knives for guidance in providing information and photos. Please message me if I have overlooked something, or if you’d like additional views of any of the knives. I will do my best to provide information or more images. • • • This is the Taylor/Seto MCR-11, which probably dates from about 1985. From what I’ve read, the all-black knife was the first style they produced in the MCR-11 line; later issues included versions with a conventional blade and a camo pattern. I’ve seen past listings describing this as a “fixed-blade tanto survival/bowie knife,” and assume that whatever that means, that’s what it is. Details and Condition : The knife measures about 11.5” long outside the sheath, and bit longer in it. The blade is about 5.75” long and a little over 1” at its widest. The sturdy leather sheath is a little over 8” long, and it fastens with a hook-and-loop closure. To the best of my knowledge, this knife has been used as described in the first paragraph. I used a microfiber cloth dampened in water to rub off dust and smudges, and have not sharpened the blade or performed any maintenance other than the wipe-down. I have no way of knowing whether my friend sharpened it, but judging from the marks the blades of my kitchen knives acquire with any type of honing, think it very unlikely. Condition issues: The blade appears to have some wear, but I can find no chips, cracks, nicks, etc. (please see the photos). One side of the base of the blade is printed with “TAYLOR/SETO SURGICAL JAPAN,” and on the other, “MCR-11 HAND MADE.” There is loss of the blacking on the knife grip outside the scabbard. The sheath has some wear to the color along the seam edges (see photos), and some fingernail-shaped indentations in the leather. The stitching of the long seam and the fastening are intact, but several stitches around either side of the opening have come undone. I believe they could be repaired by a shoemaker. Shipping and Satisfaction: This knife will be well packed and boxed and shipped to you with delivery confirmation. I am happy to consolidate your purchases to reduce your postage whenever possible. I refund shipping overpayments, accept returns, and will work to achieve our mutual satisfaction should any problems arise with this transaction. Please contact me if you have any questions, and enjoy bidding!
