VINTAGE TIFFIN GLASS MOON & STARS FRANCISCAN PUNCH BOWL SET Includes: Punch bowl, glass ladle, 12 cups and underplate This auction is for the beautiful Tiffin Glass punch bowl set shown in the photos. Tiffin Glass Company is no longer in business, so it's a rare opportunity to be able to purchase a piece like this. This is one of their most popular patterns, "Moon and Stars Franciscan". You get everything shown in the photos, including the punch bowl, 12 cups, glass ladle and the under plate. The under-plate is very large and heavy, and measures almost 18" wide, the punch bowl is almost 11" wide and is just over 6" tall. There are 12 cups that are 2.25" tall and almost 3" wide including the handle. This is a really hard to find set offered at this low opening price! It's in great shape - no chips, nicks or flea bites that I could see or feel on any of the pieces. This would make a great wedding gift, engagement present, or just to use for yourself. It's hard to find these, and this is one of their harder-to-find patterns. It's very large and very heavy, and weighs 20 pounds before packing (about 25 pounds when packed). The item will ship in two boxes - one just for the large under plate, and then the punch bowl and cups will ship in another box. I will carefully pack your item for safe arrival, but please note that shipping charges include insurance and extra packing materials and two over sized boxes (post office charges extra for larger boxes). Local (Harrisburg, PA) folks may pick up in person and save shipping. J. Beatty & Sons glass factory of Steubenville, Ohio, would be relocating to Tiffin, Ohio. A. J. Beatty had been negotiating with various communities for more than a year to establish a site for the new factory. The city of Tiffin offered five years of natural gas, $35,000 in cash, and land valued at $15,000. Construction of a three-furnace glass factory at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Vine Street began in September 1888, and operations commenced on August 15, 1889. Early production capacity was reported to be 500,000 pressed tumblers per week. A. J. Beatty & Sons merged with the United States Glass Company on January 1, 1892, and became one of nineteen factories of the large corporation. The Tiffin factory was designated Factory R. On May 23, 1893, less than two years later, Factory R was destroyed by fire. The factory was rebuilt in Tiffin in return for two additional years of free natural gas. During the early years of the 1900s, there was a gradual shift from pressed to blown tableware, in response to customers' demands. A paper label identified the glass items with the letters USG intertwined within a gold-colored shield. Commercial ware continued to be marketed under the United States Glass Company name until September 1927. After that time, household goods were identified by a gold paper label with TIFFIN superimposed on a large "T" within a shield. While other factories within the United States Glass Company were forced to close during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Factory R managed to survive. In June 1938, the offices of the United States Glass Company were transferred from Pittsburgh to Tiffin with C. W. Carlson as President. By 1940, all glassware was marked with a Tiffin label; however, the official name of the company remained the United States Glass Company through 1962.The purchase of numerous Duncan and Miller Glass Company molds and equipment occurred in 1955. Several popular Duncan patterns were produced by the Tiffin and Glassport factories from 1956 until the closing of the Tiffin facility in 1980.
