This Vintage Antique Blue & White ToileTransferware Salt & Pepper Set wasmade by Palissy of Longton, England.The pattern depicts a Scene with a castle,large ship and a small boat with fishermen.The bottom of the shakers bear thenumber "10" and:"PALISSY POTTERY""ENGLAND"Salt Shaker Height: 3 inchesSalt Shaker Width: 1 5/8 inchesSalt Shaker Weight: 2.4 ouncesPepper Shaker Height: 3 1/8 inchesPepper Shaker Width: 1 5/8 inchesPepper Shaker Weight: 1.6 ounces ouncesToile (pronounced "twall") originated in France.It is a classic decorating pattern that is over200 years old. In 1779, the introduction ofcopper plates made the characteristic preciseand detailed drawings possible. Toile dishestypically consist of only two colors and usuallyportray pastoral scenes, from daily life, orhistorical landmarks, such as castles.Transferware is the term assigned to ceramicsthat are decorated with motifs that are appliedby engravings transferred from a copperengraving, to a special tissue, and then onto apottery base.This type of Red & White Toile Transferwarewas developed & popularized in England,during the 1750's, at the beginning of theIndustrial Revolution.
