This is a Japanese hand forged rebate or rabbet plane. It is razor sharp. This blade will shave the hairs on your arm. Traditionally Japanese planes and chisels were sharpened with a flat sharpened face. No round bevel. We've maintained that with the sharpening of this blade. Looking close up at the planers edge you can see the two main layers of steel. There is a hard steel edge and the softer steel body. Within the softer body there are often various layers of steel that were hammered out in the old way of making tools and swords in Japan. Some of those layers can be seen in the close up photo. The body is one piece of white oak and is 9 1/2 inches long (24 cm) and 3 inches tall (7.5 cm). The blade is 3/4 of an inch wide (2 cm). It weighs 3/4 of a pound (.38 kilo) This is a beautiful blade and plane. Mr. Yamamoto wanted to make sure everyone knew who owned this plane so he had his name branded into the top and back. In the late 1800's when the Samurai were told they could no longer carry their swords, one of the industries to suffer from this edict were the sword makers. They were out of a job. Many went from making swords, hammering out the steel layer over layer, to making tools. Many of these tools were made in the same traditional way. This plane is part of the legacy of that skill. A serious plane for anyone who does woodworking. read more
