I have collected Persian Tribal Rugs with LIONS for quite a number of years and am fortunate enough to have visited Iran before the revolution in 1979. I am not an expert or a dealer, but simply a collector down-sizing. I have had this rug for a number of years: it is not new and I feel it has some age and is from BEFORE the revolution (1979). It measures 40" X 58" NOT including the end fringes and is wool on wool. Of all the different types of LION rugs I have seen and collected, THIS particular type of LION is my favorite. It is an ancient design and can be traced back literally thousands of years. Most recently, it was closely associated with the Pahlavi Dynasty and can be seen on the reverses of most of the coinage during their period...ending in 1979. Because of this association with the former government, this design has not been seen recently. THIS particular rug is very well designed and executed: a forceful, white-bellied, Golden LION standing proudly against a burnt orange/red field...the brighter pictures were taken with a flash. Notice the abrash in the field and the shading throughout the field. This sword-raising Lion is symbolic of Ali and holds religious symbols as well as political.
