Very Old Vintage Hand Pieced Turkey Red and White Quilt Top Block Name: Crow's Nest Also known as Churn Dash, Double Wrench, & Lover's Knot This very old quilt is likely Civil War era to early Victorian. Definitely pre-1900. It is deeply discolored and stained from age and storage, and has numerous holes and rips, mostly in the border. I would not call it a cutter, however, since the blocks themselves are in incredible shape, and the top is beautifully hand pieced. It lays perfectly flat without a ripple. The incredible workmanship on this top and the wonderfully preserved red fabric is what sets it apart. The blocks are 8" squares set on point with plain muslin 8" setting squares between them. Two different red fabrics have been used in this quilt, and both are shown in close up pictures. A 1-1/4" red border surrounds the center blocks. All work to this point is hand stitched. The blocks are in good condition with no open seams or rips. T is some staining in a few of the blocks. The muslin setting squares are in mostly good condition, with a few holes and significant discoloration. An 8" plain muslin border was machine stitched on. This was most likely done with a treddle machine. This outer border has the most damage. T are several holes and rips, as well as discoloration and stains. This is visible in the pictures. This top has probably not been used, but it is difficult to tell for sure given the aging. Despite its problems, this quilt is a lovely example of late 19th century quiltmaking, and with careful cleaning and restoration could be a show piece. I believe this tip could be gently laundered and much of the discoloration and staining may be removed. I would test the red fabric for color-fastness prior to washing, however.
