Vintage Painting on Black Silk Titled "Ayasofia - Istanbul," also known as The Church of Divine Wisdom and the Hagia SophiaThis is a medium size hand-painted scene on black silk. The image is of The Church of Divine Wisdom or Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, one of the most impressive structures in the world, built by the Emperor Justinian in 537 A.D. This became a mosque in 1453 and because of its structural and historical significance, was proclaimed a museum in 1935.The painting retains its vivid colors and shows no deterioration or fading. The silk painting is sewn into its paper matting. The paper mat frames and encloses the silk painting. I have not removed the matting to view the silk but can see that the silk extends about 2" into the paper and is squared off with no apparent fraying. No artist's name is found on the painting. There is a tear in the paper matting on the left front. This does not affect the silk painting.Paper mat size is 19" x 25 1/4"Viewable area (art) is 15 1/4" x 18 1/2"Text on front reads: "Ayasofia - Istanbul"Obtained from an estate auction, this is one of four silk paintings by the same artist depicting scenes in Istanbul, Turkey. Condition is Very Good. Age is estimated to be 40+ years.
