The foundation of embroidery is coarse cotton fabric. Embroidery is made in natural silk and cotton threads with couching stitch. It has a backing of cotton fabric. Suzani - beautiful traditional silk handmade embroideries from Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries. It is called by other names too - keshte, kashta (in Uzbek), some people call them suzni. There are a lot of different types and patterns of suzanis - they vary by region; and even one region has different designs. Patterns of such embroideries have deep cultural roots which go back to pagan times. Such handmade articles were traditionally made by women as a part of their dowry.
