This is a neat and unique Vernier Depth Gage. It has a fitted wood case. This is in very nice "work experienced" condition. It is in clean functioning condition, and has plenty of use left. This would make a nice addition to a collection of boxed measuring tools. These are handy for machinists needing an accurate and quick method for measuring the depth of a hole or groove. This appears to be made by a toolmaker. I haven't seen another example like this one by a commercial company. The stamping on the back is "W. PUTT", which I presume is the name of the individual that made this. The storage box likewise looks like something individually made, rather than commercial production. I have no idea of this tool's age. The Vernier system of measurement was invented back in 1631, so this could be any age... the jeweling finish was used extensively back in the late 1800's and earlier. This is in very good condition for its age. The photos should show the overall condition. T are no engravings or owner marks other than the stamping on the back.
