Creation of “VulcainUSA”
The American market helped to nurture the Vulcain legend.
Over half a century later, the Manufacture from Le Locle celebrates its major comeback
In creating “VulcainUSA”, the Manufacture based in Le Locle (Switzerland) is reviving ties with its prestigious past. The brand’s new models are now available in North America. In the 20th century, the American market made a major contribution to Vulcain’s success and left an indelible imprint on its history. Several American presidents, including Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson, proudly wore the famous Cricket model. In 1947, after five years of research and development, Vulcain launched the first genuinely functional wristwatch and the most innovative of its time. Aptly named the Cricket, it featured a strikingly lifelike reproduction of the strident cry of the diminutive insect. The model was to enjoy phenomenal success in the United States, w presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson served as eminent ambassadors of the Cricket, nicknamed ever since “The Presidents’ Watch”. Sixty years later, Vulcain is staging a noteworthy comeback on this market so closely bound up with its history. Vulcain has enjoyed a rich past on North American soil. In the mid-20th century, a dense distribution network offered the brand’s products in many different cities. Recently reborn and rejuvenated, Vulcain intends to revive this network and is delighted to announce the creation of “VulcainUSA”. Heading the new company, Scott Moskovitz is assuming responsibility for promoting the latest Vulcain watches in the United States. A keen watch-making connoisseur, Scott Moskovitz has acquired considerable professional experience and is also a seasoned observer of the North American market. In agreement with brand President and CEO Bernard R. Fleury, he will take charge of the Vulcain’s destiny in this legendary territory.
After experiencing a certain lull in its activities in the late 1990s, Vulcain was given a new lease on life when acquired by Production & Marketing Horloger SA (PMH SA) in 2001. President and CEO Bernard R. Fleury was determined to revive the brand’s exceptional legacy, and in particular to resurrect the Cricket movement by adapting it to modern standards and enriching it with new developments. Occupying a niche within the watch market by offering high-quality mechanical watches, this was the primary objective guiding the renewal of the Manufacture Vulcain.
Vulcain Celebrates its 150TH Anniversary
While very few manufacturers can lay claim to a century and a half of horological passion, this venerable age is being celebrated at Vulcain to the sound of innovation, energy and fine workmanship. The limited editions released to mark the occasion are complemented by the emergence of resolutely sporting new collections. Setting the crowning touch to this important jubilee, Vulcain published a book providing a wealth of information and retracing its 150 years of history.
