This auction is for a rare, seldom seen, 1948 Warren undercutter axe head made by the Warren Axe & Tool Company of Warren, PA. These undercutter axes are rare as they were only produced for a very short time. The book Axemakers of North America (McPhail 2006) has a great description of this style of axe on p. 19. The head measures 12 3/4” from the axe bit to the chisel point. The axe bit is 3 ¾” wide and the chisel end is about 1 5/8" wide and 4 1/2" long. It is stamped Warren on one side and on the other W48 for Warren 1948.The total weight is 4 lbs. 7.4 oz. This old undercutter is stained dark and has very light, scattered pitting.
