The item for sale is a beautifully restored Art Deco styled Western Electric Model 302 telephone with the earlier metal body. The 302 was designed by famed designer Henry Dreyfus and came out about 1937. They used metal bodies for the first four years of production. It was the first Western Electric phone to have a ringer internally, and thus requires no ringer box. In late 1941 a new hard plastic body (often called Bakelite) was introduced for the 302 and used for the remainder of the production run (till around 1954). This is a nice early model which was produced with the metal body in January 1941, as can be seen from the 1/41 date stamping on the chassis. Most of the internal components are original, save the dial. The dial was probably replaced in a phone company service call in the early 50's. We have restored the phone cosmetically and checked it for proper electrical function. It has been re-wired with the original type cloth insulated wiring. The metal body was repainted using the original type oil based paint and then polished. The chasses was disassembled, cleaned and the black paint was locally touched up as required. The suede "feet" covers were inspected and we left the originals on as they are in good condition (see picture of the chassis bottom).
