RARE Vintage Wedgwood Jasperware Portrait Medallion - Earl Mountbatten of BurmaA rather uncommon portrait medallion for you now, limited to only 750 produced Worldwide, this one is of The Earl Louis Mountbatten, Admiral of the Fleet Measuring approximately 11cm in length, a width of 8cm and to a depth of just under 1cm (10mm) this piece features a single portrait image of Mountbatten, in white bas-relief , to a pale blue ground. The plaque additionally has a broad laurel leaf rim border and a hanging point to the reverse. The piece is impress marked to its reverse (1978), as per the addit ional image. The plaque also carries the gold lettered narrative and limited edition status, this being number 76 in a small Worldwide run of only 750.The piece is in overall excellent condition and is free from damage.The uncle to our current Consort Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, Louis Mountbatten was both an accomplished naval commander (later admiral of the fleet) and statesman, if a little controversial at times. He pushed through the doomed Dieppe raid of 1942 and later was heavily involved in the partition and independence of India and Pakistan in 1947, something that was not widely supported. He was murdered by a member of the Provisional IRA aboard his fishing boat in 1979 alongside his Grandson and two others.I have struggled to find read more
