Vintage Weil Ware California Pottery Dinnerware (Rose Pattern/Green)
Up for auction today is this extremely lovely and RARE set of dinnerware. The auction includes 50 pieces of the Weil Ware Hand-Painted California Pottery Dinnerware in the Rose Pattern on a lovely jadeite green background. This set was an absolute exquisite and near-mint find at an estate sale on Chicago's north side. The set was found in a Marshall Field's box shoved under a table in the basement, wrapped in newspapers dated from 1983 and paper towels which virtually disintegrated in my hands as I unwrapped each piece. These dishes date back to circa 1947, that's 60 years old. Most pieces are in perfect, virtually unused condition, with a lovely gloss and vivid, bright colors in the pattern. They are hand painted. The rose pattern is slightly different on each piece, not on each set of pieces. T are no cracks (hairline or otherwise) or chips! Several of the pieces DO have crazing which is due entirely to age, and they are noted below, but most of the set is in mint condition. T was some yellowish residue on some of the pieces, again due to age and years of storage, but I have given each piece a gentle washing in mild detergent, and this yellowish discoloration has gone away (needless to say, these dishes are NOT dishwasher safe). This is an extremely special set and rare find. Basically, it is service for five, but in addition, so many serving pieces! A check of Ebay, the Internet in general and Replacements Ltd. will show not only that this dinnerware is not commonly available, but that prices for individual pieces range from $10 on up to $45 and more for the major serving pieces. In addition to the fact that these were packed in a Marshall Field's box, one of the pieces does still have a Marshall Field's label on it (see photos), so obviously this set came from Field's in the mid-40's sometime; all pieces are marked with the Weil Ware logo of a donkey and say "Hand Decorated WEIL WARE Made in California Des. Pat. Appl. For" and bear a number in a circle, see photos. Marks on pieces vary from quite faded to distinct. Shipping and Handling will be a flat charge of $70 within the continental U.S. This set will ship via UPS Ground. It will come in two boxes, both double-boxed, each piece individually wrapped in bubble wrap. Prospective bidders in Hawaii, Alaska or Canada, please Email for shipping charges. Insurance is included in Shipping & Handling. A list of the 50 pieces and approximate dimensions follow (all dimensions in inches): Five dinner plates, 10 X 10 (crazing on one plate) Five salad plates, 8 X 8 (crazing on 3 plates) Five bread and butter plates, 6 X 6 (crazing on one plate) Five additional smaller plates, 5.75 X 5.75 Five cups, 3.25 X 3.25 square Five saucers, 6 X 6 Five pedestal dessert bowls or compotes, 4 X 4 square and 2.5 high One large serving platter, 13.5 X 9.5 One casserole with cover, 9.75 X 5.5 One open vegetable dish, 9 X 6.75 One divided vegetable dish, 9.75 X 6 Three tumblers or vases, 4.5 high One coffee pot with lid, 8.25 high One sugar with lid, proportional to coffee pot One creamer, proportional to coffee pot One butter dish with cover, 7 X 2.75 TOTAL 50 pieces PLEASE NOTE: This is a 10-day auction which will end on will end on Friday, June 22.
