VINTAGE WICKER SEWING BASKET ENGLISH MADE LEATHER TOP I am pleased to offer this vintage wicker sewing basket. It was made by Hardy in Sheffield, England. This sewing basket is quite charming! It is all original with a leather top and original sewing implements. The basket has a tag inside that says Made in England, Hardy, Sheffield. The basket is padded and lined with a beautiful light gold satin moiré fabric. The top is brown leather with a small tab for a handle. The interior borders are leather, as well as the sewn in reinforcements for holding the sewing tools. The basket still retains some of the original sewing tools. Two of the tools have tortoise shell or faux tortoise shell handles. They are probably Bakelite or plastic tortoiseshell, but I'm not positive. T is also a threading tool and some type of a sewing pick (I suppose - I do not sew.) It may be bone, celluloid, or possibly Bakelite. In the lower interior part of the basket, t is a brass double bar rod that slides along the leather tabs. It may be for storing thread and other sewing items. Please see the photos for details. The basket measures 12 inches across at the top. It flares out a bit in the center to about 13 inches. It is 8 ¼ inches wide and 7 inches in height. The wicker is in excellent condition. T are no areas of breakage or damage that I can see. The tiny old nails that hold the strong piece of reed at the top are all in place. T are no tears in the satin fabric. T are a few small pin prick holes and what looks like some rust stains, possibly from the metal tools on the fabric of the lid. The satin also has what looks to be a few ink spots in the upper right hand corner. I think that could be easily cleaned. None of this detracts from this piece, and I think the interior is in remarkable condition. The leather top has some scuffs and scratches and some wear at the back right corner. Overall, I think the condition of the top is quite good. The bottom base appears to have an old label in the corner that is torn, and I can't read it. This is a very high quality basket and would be great for use and wonderful on display!
