You are viewing an exquisite antique ivy league statue. This little gem depicts the renowned mascot for the Yale University football team . . . "handsome Dan". Yale was the first, ever, to adopt a live mascot for sporting events. The tradition began back in 1889 and continues today with dog number 16. This primitive college relic is done in a heavy vintage genuine copper. I have to tell you that this has been one of my most exciting finds because of how I found him . . . he was laying in a heap of trash and he was covered in such a thick and grotesque muck that deemed him totally and completely unrecognizable. This barnacle laden object intrigued me and prompted my curiosity w I took it home and began to clean him up. I was astonished to discover that I unearthed a genuine 1920's marked Yale bull dog mascot . . . whoa . . . outstanding! I didn't polish him up entirely because I wanted to leave some of the beautiful blue/green verdigris patina. This archeological discovery sports the canine clad in his official sweater. In real life on the game field, the dogs wear a crimson colored sweater. This metalware sculpture bears a plaque on the lower front that is marked "Yale". The word is considerably faded due to the old age, but if you look carefully you can indeed see it (see photograph below). During my cleaning session I did not touch this delicate area in fear of the name coming off all together. The expression on the pup is magnificent . . . his grueling face and aggressive posture make this inanimate figure truly come alive . . . superb! He's leaning on the football as if to say something like: "you gotta problem?" or "don't worry about me . . . worry about you!" The extraordinary detail travels all the way down to the sharp claws on his paws. This New Haven puppy has a coin slit on it's underside like it were a piggy bank. This bottom area is scratched up, but not from my doing. This decorative arts trophy makes a special gift for the professor, school historian, teacher, student, or alumni. W ever this piece of history ends up, one thing is certain: He will bring old world charm and sophistication to any space he occupies. This majestic animal measures 6 inches high (15.2cm), 5 inches wide (12.7cm), and 2 3/4 inches deep (7cm). CONDITION IS EXCELLENT: No dings, dents, breaks, or repairs. The patina, as mentioned earlier, is spectacular! If everything in your life reflects elegance and good taste, and you care passionately about detail, this historical jewel belongs to you. Truly a striking and impressive collectible find with a visual heft that warrants showing off. Promise to compliment any fine collection or decor.
