VINTAGE YAMAHA DRUM SHELL PACK CIRCA 1969 Here is a rare drum set from Yamaha and dates from 1969 and is finished in Golden Dragon wrap . Sizes are 20x14,13x9, 16x16 and 14x5.5 snare. Overall in very good condition for its age. As far as i can tell Yamaha started making drum sets around 1969 and they were much better than the usual kits Made in Japan at the time. There was the Y series which were aimed at the Pro player and the C series which was more of a budget set. The kit for sale here is a C series possibly a C220 although going from what few catalogues i have found on the net this set has an 8 lug snare instead of the normal 6 and the floor tom has 8 lugs instead of the normal 6, why this would be i don't know. Not sure of the shell construction but the inner ply looks to be of a good wood and there is a diagonal join in all the drums. BASS DRUM is all complete apart from its sticker/badge which is missing. There is a cymbal arm mount but no arm but these are available if you wish to use one. The wrap is in good condition, there is some pitting to the lugs and claws but just usual for a 40 year old set. The heads are Evans Blue Rock Batter and a smooth white Reso with the proper Yamaha logo which i got made and there is a spare logo included should you wish to change heads. The original spurs are there but again suffer from some pitting. The consolette tom holder works as it should but needs a 12mm spanner to adjust. SNARE DRUM is complete although the original strainer is missing and has been replaced with a Premier/Olympic 1636 which has resulted in a couple of extra holes which are not really visible. The tone control is there and the heads are Aquarian Vintage coated batter (almost new) and a Remo Ambassador snare side with 20 strand snare wires. Someone has written inside the shell, Drum set 23/6/97 Snare, Bass, Big Tom, Wee Tom. There is also a faint stamp of C 4174 inside the shell, this number is also inside the rack tom and floor tom. Possibly production or kit number? There is a basic snare drum stand that will be included with the kit. RACK TOM is complete with tone control although i think the bottom hoop is not original but is quite a good match There is a couple of small pieces of wrap missing (see pic) where the snare drum has rubbed. There is some pitting to the lugs again usual for a kit of this age. The heads are Remo CS White on the top and CS clear on the bottom although used they still have life left in them. FLOOR TOM is all complete with tone control and legs with original rubber feet, wrap is in good condition again the bottom hoop does not look original but again quite a good match. Heads are the same as the rack tom Remo CS White on top and Remo CS Clear on the bottom. There is some pitting to the lugs and leg mounts. These kits came in 4 finishes, Golden Dragon, Red and Blue Thunder and Midnight Surf. I have found several pictures but none of the Midnight Surf. These drums do seem to be quite rare and most seem to surface in the USA although there have been a couple of Red Thunder sets appeared here in recent years. Although Yamaha's first venture into drum making the little attentions to detail are interesting for example each lug screw has a little locking washer between the screw and large washer. I would like to keep this set but need the space so it is time for it to have a new owner. I have gigged it several times and it has received many compliments at gigs. A superb chance to own a nice piece of retro drum history. Kit will be shipped in two boxes.
