VIRGIN MARY This is a unique oil painting done in the Cuzco style from Peru. It is hand painted with oil on canvas by a local artist. The canvas used are old and used flour bags called jute sacks. The exact age of this painting is unknown. This depicts Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, in a classic portrait pose. She appears to wear brocade clothing. The Cuzco School is a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Peru during the Colonial period from the 16th to the 18th Centuries. The European influence in these paintings came from the Spanish who tried to convert the Incas to Catholicism. Cuzco Paintings are characterized by their exclusive use of religious images, lack of perspective, and the predominance of red, yellow, and earth colors. They also use a lot of gold leaf. The subjects are usually depicted in native flora and fauna as a backdrop. Most of these paintings were created anonymously because of Pre-Columbian traditions that define art as communal. This one is painted on a stiffer type of jute sack. It is sturdier and not as delicate as the other ones. It measures approximately 11.75" x 15.5". The canvas itself measures approximately 13.5" x 17.5". This painting is not stretched or framed. It will be shipped to you rolled up. FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE US!
