This piece of altered art, from Dos Mujeres Studio, is entitled "Virgin in a Boat" because it began as a pretty ugly rowboat picture frame. After vast alterations, lots of hammered red paint, hand applied gilt, candles set into copper pipe caps, and a car statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe, it appears before you now as "Virgin in a Boat," approximately 9" tall. The Virgin of Guadalupe is known as the Queen of Mexico, Empress of the Americas, the first indigenous Hispanic Catholic icon. She, more than any other image, signifies the plight of the Mexican underclass and she has always been associated with those who need the protection of the Divine Mother. According to the legend, she spoke to Juan Diego, a poor man, in his own language, Nahuatl. She called out saying, "Juanito, Juan Dieguito ", "the most humble of my sons", "my son the least", "my little dear . . . Be not troubled nor afraid. Am I not , I thy mother? Art thou not beneath my protection? Am I not thy shield?" She sent him to the Church to ask for a new chapel, devoted to her worship. When the Church refused him twice, the Virgin sent him back, telling him to open his cape upon making his request. With the Church's predictable third refusal, Juan Diego opened his cape, from which spilled dozens of fresh red roses, a miracle in the coldest month of the year. The final touch
