You are bidding on a $1 VA Treasury Note. In the center picture, a lady sits by the shore holding a bucket with ships in the background. Issued in Richmond Virginia. It features a large red ONE printed lower center, and the number 1 surrounded by a red design in the upper right and left hand corners. The back is blank.Hand signed and numbered Size: 7 x 3" Printed by: Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond (these dudes also printed notes for the Confederacy!)At the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, the strategic location of the Tredegar Iron Works was one of the primary factors in the decision to make Richmond the Capital of the Confederacy. From this arsenal came the 723 tons of armor plating that covered the CSS Virginia , the world's first ironclad used in war, as well as much of the Confederates' heavy ordnance machinery. In February, 1861, Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as President of the Confederate States of America in Montgomery, Alabama , the first Confederate capital. In the early morning of April 12, 1861, the Confederate army fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina , and the Civil War had begun. On April 17, 1861, Virginia seceded from the United States and joined the Confederate States, and soon thereafter the Confederate government moved its capital to Richmond.
