Visions of Spaceflight <> Images from the Ordway Collection <><> 2001. HC, 9x12, 176 pages. This book assembles a fabulous collection of images of astronautics and rocketry. The imagery, both imagined and real, extends from the 16th century to the eve of the space age in the late 1950s and is culled from Fred Ordway's collection--he was one of America's first rocket scientists. Images abound of astronauts maneuvering near Mars and fantastic vehicles with propulsion ranging from dewdrops (17th century) to anti-gravity (19th century). A compelling mix of intentionally fantastic and the rigorously scientific. "A fascinating look at a lifetime of research." -Arthur C. Clarke. Not the usual collection of paperback and pulp covers, many of the pieces of artwork are serious technical representations of technically feasible spacecraft, including a fabulous selection from the famous 1950s space series done for Collier magazine and painted by Fred Freeman and Rolf Klep along with Chesley Bonestell. 200 illustrations. 176 page heavily illustrated hardcover book with dustjacket in new condition .
