bronzed plaster casting marked on back of shoulder Abraham Lincoln/Modeled From Life/By/Leonard W. Volk/Chicago 1860/Replica and in small marking to left but unreadable, mounted on a white composite marble plinth, which rests on black painted wood plate on which is Volk`s, casting of Lincoln`s hand, also in bronzed plaster, 11` wide x 16` deep x 22` high. Leonard W. Volk (1828 - 1895) was an American sculptor, born in Wellstown (now Wells), N.Y. In 1848 he moved to St. Louis and studied drawing while working at funerary sculpture. With the aid of Stephen A. Douglas he studied in Rome, and in 1857 he opened a studio in Chicago. He closely studied both Lincoln and Douglas during their famous debates and also made a life mask of Lincoln and casts of his hands. A leading figure in the Chicago art world, Volk was active in founding the Chicago Academy of Design. His colossal Douglas monument is in Chicago, and statues of Lincoln and Douglas are in the capitol at Springfield.
