This is a very rare 4 volume Carmelite Rite Breviary!! This is not the Roman Breviary with the Carmelite Supplement, this is the original Carmelite Rite Breviary which came into being around the middle of the 12th Century and is known as the Rite of The Holy Sephulchre which was in use at Jerusalem. In the 16th Century when St. Theresa of Avila began the Discalced Carmelite reform the Discalced slowly did away with this ancient breviary to adopt the Roman Breviary with Carmelite supplements, but the Calced Carmelites who are the originals from Mt. Carmel continued its use until Second Vatican Council. The last printing of this Carmelite Rite Breviary is 1938 which is the copy for sale. It is all Latin with many pictures for the Carmelite feastdays and solemnities. The cover is a beautiful leather and the page ends are gold leaf. The pages inside are a very delicate and light but beautiful paper. I have seen these breviaries sell at places for 1000 dollars!! This breviary set is completely out of print and not in use anywhere except a few monasteries thoughout the world in Carmels. St. John of the Cross was a great defender of preserving these breviaries for the discalced carmelites. They ar 6 3/4 inches high by 4 1/4 wide by 1 1/2 inches thick!! Imagine to be praying the very same breviaries that St. Theresa of Avila and St. John read more
