6 VOLUMES 1870S PUNCH ILLUSTRATED CYPRUS TURKEY INDIA Description: Offered is an exceptional set of six volumes, fine binding volumes of Punch magazine from the 1870s, replete with hundreds of fine cartoons and engravings and prints. These are some of the finest political cartoons ever, and they came out in the midst of several major historical events, not least the dismemberment of the Ottoman Turkish Empire.T are MANY cartoons lampooning Turkey, such as the one we scanned, showing the European powers enjoying Turkey Pie. But t are many others involving Turkey. One we particularly like is a folding cartoon 16x10 titled Bull and his Burdens (John Bull was the archetype Englishman). John Bull is pictured as a British-faced Bull with various turbaned and fezzed riders. At the back, t is a black African barely handing on, with his dialog balloon reading, Der's jis' room for me.We see Benjamin Disraeli (British P.M.) redrawing the map of India at the Afghan border. A woman wearing a sari confronts him. Another is captioned Pig Stickers Beware! and shows a pith-helmeted Briton going after an Afghan Boar. A bit of doggerel verse accompanies the cartoon, warning, "still 'tis a sport w to falter or bungle, Is like to prove fatal." How prescient. T are several cartoons we seen featuring Afghanistan, and several with Cyprus featured. Each read more
