This numbering reflects the Regiment’s status as the oldest Line regiment in the British Army (up until the recent amalgamation), having been originally raised in 1633. Although not as famous or widely known as the kilted Scottish regiments, they have a very long and distinguished record, present at most of the major battles of the British Army over the last three centuries. This pair of medals comprises the WWI British War Medal, named to a 2 nd Lieutenant, Royal Scots, and the Victorian Volunteer Long Service Medal, named to a Sergeant in a volunteer battalion R. S. The Volunteer L. S. Medal was instituted in 1894 for men of the Volunteer Forces who had completed twenty years service. Medals are officially edge-named as follows:Volunteer Long Service Medal 4586 - SERGEANT JOHN GALL B CO Y 5 TH V. B. R. S. 1898 British War Medal 2. LIEUT. J. R. GALL.
