VON HAGEN KNIVES Why Just Buy A Knife When You Can Buy A Piece Of Art? My name is Richard Palmer, functional artist and maker of Von Hagen Knives. Thank you for taking the time to look at my work. I hope you like what you see. This is a new style of knife that my mind has been playing with for quite some time. I call this particular one THE SHARK'S TOOTH. The idea of The Shark's Tooth is to provide a fixed blade pocket knife. Did you know that many states have passed laws w it is illegal to carry a concealed knife that has a blade longer than three (3) inches? Yes, it's true. This blade is 2 5/8". The entire knife is a mere 6". With this knife, you have the convenience of a fixed blade in a pocket knife size. A Production Engineer, who works with a very well known and prominent knife maker in Southern California, comes by my shop once in a while and visits with me. He has purchased a handful of my knives and often tells me that he admires my work. One day he came by with a set of blueprints for a folding knife. "Rick" he said, "this is the future of the knife. If you study these blueprints and can incorporate the plans into your own knives, you will own the market." He said that people loved "gadgets" and pushing buttons and that sort of thing. I DID take those blueprints and study them - for a very long time. I kept steering away from the idea, however, because t are situations when a folding knife just is not convenient. What if you are in a situation w you need to defend yourself? Many folding knives are just stuck in a pocket. You would need to dig the knife out of your pocket and open it. By the time you do that, it may be too late to be able to defend yourself! A switchblade style knife is called convenient because it opens fast. What opens faster than a fixed blade that is already open and ready to use? The weak point in ANY folding knife is at the hinge of the knife. While toying with the idea of making this knife, I tested many folding knives for strength and durability. What I found was very surprising. In a vice using between 8 and 12 pounds of torque, the knives broke. Some just snapped while others practically disintegrated. These tests included both inexpensive "throw away" knives and well known brand name knives that run between $300 and $400 on the market when new. Also, a story that my brother-in-law told me kept coming to mind. When David was a young boy, he was found outside opening and slamming the car door - over and over. His father came out and told him to stop doing that, explaining that anything with moving parts will wear down after too many uses. The same theory holds true with a folding knife. Each time you open and close it, it wears the parts just a little more. I pride myself in making knives that can not only be used regularly but can be passed down from generation to generation. T are no moving parts to wear down. When I decided it was finally time to make a small knife that is easy to carry and easy to access, I looked around at what was already out t This style stayed in the back of my mind and I kept comparing what I saw to the one I saw in my mind. The "necklace knives" have become very popular recently. I looked at those and could see the practical side of them but could not imagine walking around all day with a knife smacking me in the chest. My pocket knife is small enough to fulfill the state law requirements. It is slim enough to fit into your pants pocket without being burdensome. The sheath can even be clipped to an inside jacket pocket so it can be carried places w you may feel uncomfortable with a knife on your side. It can be carried inside a briefcase or inside of a purse. It is rugged enough to use to gut a deer yet simple and elegant to put in your suit pocket when you go to work or go out.
