LONDON: John Murray. 1820. (Published date 1820). RARE EARLY EDITION. 8vo. 6.75" x 4.25" inches. (LxB). Pp. vi, (2), 339, (1) pages + hand-colored engraved frontispiece, three engraved plates and one folding engraved map Map shewing Track Alceste and Lyra in the Yellow Sea, west coast of Corea & Loo Choo Islands. Bound in the original contemporary 3/4 leather over marbled boards with leather tips, spine sympathetically rebacked in antique style, gilt decorated spine with 4 raised bands & 2 black & red gilt lettered morocco labels. The present edition is confined to the Narrative (alone) of the expedition (February 1816 - August 1817) of the British Naval ships the Alceste and the Lyra under the command of Captain Murray Maxwell . The Alceste carried Lord Amherst's Embassy on the second British trade mission to China to explore the relatively little known East China Sea and the Yellow Sea.
