And an Account of the Settlement, Commerce, and Riches of the Jesuites in Paraguay. ____________________________________________ LONDON Printed for JONAH BOWYER, at the Rose in Ludgate-Street. ___________________________________________________________ MDCCXVII (1717) Bound (once) in full leather with five raised bands to spine. Measuring approx 24.5cm x 19.5cm x 3.5cm. The front board is detached. The board edges are chipped and bumped with loss. The leather is scuffed, scratched and worn. The top and bottom of spine are chipped with loss and there is a chip with peeled repaired leather to top of front board. Title label missing. Internally the front free endpaper, front blank and frontis are chipped to edges and are wrinkled/creased and detached. The frontispiece is stained to bottom corner and edges and has a couple of tears to inner edges. There is some staining to several bottom corners and edges. Thumbed and grubby throughout, with some foxing/browning in places (touch heavier in places). Outer page edges are bumped and there are some creases, nicks and chips. Contents are cracking in a couple of places, thus have a little movement and a couple of leaves are detached (thus these leaves are a bit tatty, dusty and chipped to edges). Missing two plates/maps. There are some pencil annotations and underlinnings in places. In very readable and mostly tight condition. Mapped Frontispiece, 6 Full page Maps/Plans, 17 Folding Maps/Plans, 10 full page Plates & 1 folding Plate. (Total of 35 Engraved PLATES/MAPS, thus missing 2) A very scarce and fascinating work, beautifully illustrated with decorated Maps, (with superb Cartouches), Plants, (Strawberry) 'Natives', Customs, Fish and Aminals etc etc Postscript by Dr EDMUND HALLEY the English astronomer, of Halley's Comet fame. Amédée-François Frézier (1682 – 1773) was a French military engineer, mathematician, spy, and explorer who is best remembered for bringing back five specimens of the beach strawberry, from his assignment in South America. He was sent to study the defense fortifications of Chile and Peru, "included making hydrographical observations, correcting existing charts, and taking exact plans of the most important ports and fortresses along the coasts". He passed himself off as tourist, so he could sketch maps of the ports, showing the best approaches for attack, the strength of the Spanish colonial governments, location of ammunition and the routes of escape. He also made notes on the Church, the 'natives', the Spanish gold and silver mines, the physical geography, flora and fauna of the area, Customs and agricultural products. His work ' Relation du voyage de la mer du Sud, aux côtes du Chili, du Pérou et de Brésil, fait pendant les années 1712, 1713, et 1714 . was well received and translated into many Europeans languages including English in 1717 which included a supplement by Edmund Halley.
