Wow! This auction is for an extremely rare and very unusual figurine that is made from some kind of composition material or thin ceramic. The figure is shaped like a Japanese Sumo Wrestler and it is completely hand painted. The apron on the front has little paper ribbons hanging down to give it added realism and the wrestler stands on top of a real wicker mat. The piece is very well made and the bottom of the mat is stamped Made In Japan and the bottom of the figurine has the original maker's label that reads Sato Hakata Doll Company - Hakata Japan. Someone also wrote Taiho Sumo on the bottom. The figurine measures about 9¼" tall and is in excellent condition, but it has some crazing due to age around his chest area. Also, one of the paper ribbons on his apron has come loose and just needs to be glued or something - it stays in place, but once it moves it falls off. Very nice, rare piece! I believe it dates to around the 1940s.
