THESE flame safety, ECCLES, MANCHESTER, ( England ) coal miners', British lamp types were used in coal mines to detect the presence of explosive methane and other flammable gasses. I purchased these two old lamps in 1967 while living in England . The dealer I purchased them from said that these were original miners' lamps used in Welsh mines. Although identical in style, they have different numbers…NO. 114 & NO. 30. The bases are solid brass and the upper bodies are, I believe , stainless. They weigh 3# 4oz. each so they are heavy. There is a round brass piece stamped with the number 5 attached to the side—maybe the miner’s #? The number 63/1568 is stamped on the top of the base. The glass is stamped 58 ¼ MP 59 ½, British MFP. I unscrewed the bases and found the corresponding numbers, 30 and 114 (there is an area where the brass has been heavily scored? on #114 read more
