Up for auction today is a really cool tool - its an "American Combined Level & Grade Finder" made by Edward Helb, Railroad, Pennsylvania. The patent dates on this level are 1904. It is approx. 24" long x 3 1/2" tall x 1 5/8" thick. It is mostly wood, with brass accents. On the side of the level are a grade finding dial - the dial is housed in a brass housing with glass over its face and a paper label. The little pressed metal pointer looks a little bent, but when you tilt the level, the hand does move. The paper label shows some staining and wear, but at least it is there, and readable. Also on the side is a level bubble, which is also set into brass. The bubble is intact, and working. Along the top is another bubble level, which is also intact and working. Farther down is a view finder marked "Longitudinal Recess View" - it has its glass intact - when you look into it, you can't see anything, but when you look into the view finder on the butt of the level, you can see light (see last picture) - I assume this looks through to the top port. There is also a compass on the top of the level - it too has a paper label and pressed metal arrow, but its label is in much better shape. Both of the top corners have brass plates, as does the bottom of the whole level. The level was used, but its surprisingly intact and in pretty good condition. read more
