Three very old, very nice Japanese prints or paintings in lacquered wood frames. I can find no marks or signature anywhere on them. The backing to every frame is plain brown paper, and there are no labels or marks on them. As for their history, all I know is that my cousin got them a few years ago at an estate sale in St. Louis. I would guess they are pre-1950, perhaps several decades older.I say "prints or paintings" because I'm not sure which they are. They LOOK like prints until I angle them in the light; the texture of the gold and some of the black details appear to be raised from the paper, like a painting would be. I'm sorry that I don't have the vocabulary of art to do justice in describing these pictures. The palette here is very narrow: colors are black and gray and gold only. Subject is the same in all three: water-side dwellings, with small boats, trees and birds. One shows a temple or shrine, I think. Another has a volcano int he background, which I assume is Mount Fuji.Condition is very good. A few small places here and there on the frames where the lacquer has been superficially dinged or worn. A small faint water spot on the lower corners on the paper. Frames are solid and sturdy. In the vertically framed picture, there appears to be a flaw in the glass on the left edge about halfway down; it looks like a crack but read more
