Description: 1 vintage World War II OSS stiletto fighting knife with pancake flapper scabbard available. The scabbard for this OSS stiletto is a rare, cut-down pancake flapper scabbard . See the photo above from page 17 of Gordon Hughes, Barry Jenkins and Robert A. Buerlein's book Knives of War . This listing represents a rare opportunity to purchase a WW II OSS stiletto with cut-down pancake flapper scabbard. The stiletto measures 10 11/16" overall. The blade itself measures 5 7/8". The base of the blade has been field-modified. Note the taper about 1" up from the guard. The blade is flat and purposely dulled on both sides on this portion of the blade either so that a finger could be wrapped above the guard to shorten the stabbing depth, or for a better grip on the knife when using it in the field of action. This scabbard measures 11 13/16" overall. The original rubber o-ring disintegrated long ago or was purposely removed so that a leather thong could be used instead. The top portion of the scabbard is pressed metal--this metal portion extends all the way down the backside of the scabbard, and ends by forming a metal tip on the scabbard. The leather portion of the sheath is riveted to the metal. The metal portion of the scabbard is painted green. As mentioned, this scabbard was field-modified by the OSS agent who carried it. It was cut-down to have a slimmer profile--also, a leather back was added to the scabbard. Condition: This vintage World War II OSS stilletto is in very good condition. Everything is solid on this knife. As noted the last 1" at the base of the blade has been purposely dulled in the field. The black blade finish is no longer present. There is only very minor superficial pitting on portions of the blade. The worst pitting is at the base of the blade on one side--an area just 1/4" by 1/8". This pitting is still minor. The green paint on the pancake flapper portion of the sheath has paint wear in all the right spots. There is paint wear at the tip of the sheath, and there is also some on the backside of the upper portion of the scabbard. There is rust on the portions of the sheath with paint wear. The metal is solid, and will stay strong for another 100 years if cared for properly. The leather portion of the scabbard that covers the blade is a little dry, and has some movement--but is only noticed when grasping the leather to check for movement. The leather backing on the upper portion of the scabbard is in good shape with all rivets and strapping intact. This fine OSS stiletto with field-modified cut-down pancake flapper scabbard represents a rare collecting opportunity.
