This sterling silver service was once owned by Audrey Sarah Gaunt Hunter Begley McAvoy, born in Brooklyn , NY in 1922 to parents who moved to America from England . Her father, Richard, was a steamship engineer working for Cunard. She is said to be a descendent of John of Gaunt. We do not know if this service was a wedding gift received in 1943 for her July 17 th , 1943 wedding, or received in 1942 to be put in her "hope" chest for her pending nuptials. This is a beautiful service, with some items still in their original wrappers appearing never to have been used. Other items have a bit of tarnish and will need polishing. T are some slight scratches, but no extensive or significant damage. The blade of the ice pick / letter opener has some irregularities in it. This piece may even be an add-on piece, and not part of the original service. T is no cutlery chest for this service. I am not a silver expert, so I may not know the correct names of certain pieces, but I have tried to give items a name / description and a measurement. If you have questions about items or need additional photos to help you make your purchasing decision, please email me. I've taken photos from different angles with different lighting, so I hope this effort helps. My reserve price was arrived at by taking the mid-range auction estimate given to me by a highly reputable Maine auction house who has a high-end auction once a year at the Samoset Resort in Maine. Their opinion was that it was a highly desirable vintage service, missing larger or numerous actual serving or hostess pieces, in very good condition, in need of polishing. This sterling silver service comes from a smoke-free home. I can assure you that each item will be wrapped with care, cushioned, and packaged in a proper fashion so as to protect your new investment.
