Walter Leighton Clark (1859 - 1935) Oil Painting -Julia Arthur as Lady Macbeth Wonderful and unique theater painting depicting Julia Arthurs a Canadian film and stage actress as she played Lady Macbeth. At the age of 12, in 1881, she became the leading woman, playing Ophelia, Juliet, Portia, Lady Macbeth, Lady Anne in Richard III, and other important roles, and remained with the Bandmann company until 1884. The painting has two stickers on back: The first from the Grand Central Galleries in New York, Inventory No. A 4904, the other from the National Academy of Design. (see images above) The painting is on canvas and measures 21 x 26". The framed size is 29 x 34". It has a small patch on back but otherwise is in excellent condition. The artist Walter Clark was Born in Philadelphia, Walter Leighton Clark was an engineer for 25 years who was also a painter. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy, where in 1928, he exhibited his work. In 1922, he conceived the idea of a cooperative gallery, and he and other artists including John Singer Sargent founded the Grand Central Art Galleries. In 1928, he was also in the building of the American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale so that American artists could be represented at that event.
