He was considered to be one of the greatest woodblock print artists of Edo Period and Meiji Era. He was a student of the famous Kuniyoshi. This print is a typical example of his art. His prints are very realistic. Yoshitoshi was a famous bijin-ga and fantastic prints artist. This print is included in one of his most famous series " Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan" printed between 1876 and 1882. This print represents Abe no Hirafu( 575-664? ), a famous warrior and an admiral. He fought against the aboriginal inhabitants of Japan. In this print, he is slaying a giant Bear.
