The fanciful 11-1/2-inch Seahorse candlestick is part of Waterford's Classic Crystal Collection; its realistic portrayal of a seahorse contrasts with the more interpretive Seahorse Abstract candlestick holders. Waterford has been making renowned crystal pieces for more than 200 years, and the centuries of craftsmanship are clearly displayed in this candlestick inspired by the seahorse, a creature with ancient, mythical significance. The Seahorse pattern is based on the crest adopted more than a decade ago to represent the Irish seaside location of the Waterford company. The seahorse floats between the base and the taper well as if suspended in the ocean; its tail is curled in a spiral, and its scales and dorsal fins are sculpted in textural detail. The thick, six-sided base evokes the shape of a sand dollar, and that motif is echoed in a smaller, secondary base which balances on the seahorse's head. This graceful candlestick holder would make a thoughtful gift for someone who loves the sea and its creatures.
